Starting from July 16, foreigners included marriage immigrants and international students without employer insurance who are staying six months or longer in South Korea are required to enroll in Korean National Health Insurance (NHI).
According to Health Ministry, this change in law is to ensure that foreigners get the same medical benefits and services as Korean and also seeks to eliminate a loophole in the system where foreigners could permanently leave the country without paying the costly medical treatment covered by the state health insurance plan.
Certainly, foreign students are not happy about this as there was an online petition against the policy change on the official Blue House website has garnered more than 34,000 signatures so far.
What do you think about this policy change? Is it unfair or fair in your opinion?
